ZDTV Tech TV

Paul McKinney

TECH TV (formerly known as ZDTV) was a 24-hour cable network with programming and information about all things digital (computers, the Internet, digital gadgets, etc.). Paul was hired to provide the voice for Dash, an animated character created in real-time using motion-capture animation technology.

Dash (along with Tilde, the female animated character) was an on-air and on-line host of ZDTV. Paul performed as Dash in on-air promos for the network. On the ZDTV program Internet Tonight, Paul (as Dash) reported daily on the latest in cool homepages in a segement called "The Homepage Hall of Fame".

While providing the Dash's voice, Paul operated specially-designed gloves that controlled Dash's mouth movements - to give the illusion that Dash was talking.

Paul also wrote and edited scripts for Dash, both for promos for the network and for Internet Tonight.

In 2004, Comcast's G4 channel merged with TechTV, and for awhile the channel was known as G4 TechTV. By 2005, the 'TechTV' portion of the name was dropped, effectively ending the network.

Motion-capture animation is animation created by capturing the motion of people or objects, and then using a computer to apply that motion to a cartoon character.

For Dash and Tilde, that meant having an actor wear a lycra suit, on which was placed numerous sensors that submitted location information to a very high-powered graphics computer. The computer then extrapolated the movements of the actor to the movements of Dash and Tilde.

The animation was completed by having the voice actors manipulate special gloves that controlled the characters' facial movements.
